Early Up-Front Involvement for Optimization
MFG has a dedicated Design Center that provides various levels of engineering support as a value-added resource to customers through each of the MFG entities.
The center supports both new product designs and design revision/updates with detailed designs analysis, and proposes design recommendations for improved ease of manufacturability.
Through "online meetings" MFG engineers, customers and tooling suppliers conduct collaborative design reviews to optimize SMC/LCM designs for manufacturability, cost, quality and overall timing reduction.
CATIA is the primary software used for the design changes required for adaptation to composite molding from other manufacturing processes. MFG can also design new parts starting from customer sketches, evolving them into 3D solids that are ready for manufacturing.
To help customer better understand composites manufacturing design issues, MFG offers 2-hour Design For Manufacture & Assembly tele-sessions that focus on SMC/LCM products. The session provides engineers and designers with detailed guidelines such as tolerances, radii, draft angles, wall thickness and how these each impact part moldability and cost.
