The New Product Development Committee announced that the winner of the MFG New Product Development Contest is Tom Woods, product line manager of confectionery and pharmaceutical products at MFG Tray Company. Tom submitted a design concept for fiber glass “curb cuts” that replaces traditional concrete. Curb cuts are the sloped ramp areas that enable wheelchairs, pedestrians using walkers or canes, strollers, wheeled carts and bicycles to move onto or off a sidewalk safely and smoothly. The new fiber glass design meets federal government mandates and offers many advantages over concrete including easier installation, better weather-resistance and lower cost.
Not only did Tom design a product with terrific competitive advantages, he also identified $28 billion in federal stimulus funds in Pennsylvania alone for curb ramp installation and repair! For this excellent research and design effort, Tom was presented with a $1,000 check. Congratulations to Tom, and thanks to all the contest entrants who contributed many creative and insightful suggestions.
